As someone who often gives specific advice to people on the Forum or IML, I often question my own actions. The line is very, very fine.

When my Q was diagnosed with kidney failure, I looked around for help. While I found a lot of people who offered me their best wishes and some general advice, I was unable to find anyone who'd really dealt with this situation (iZ's toubles and Bon's journey to help him had not yet begun). There is good information out there, but sometimes you just need someone who has "been there; done that."

After Q had stabilized I decided I wanted to help other who found themselves in the same situation, especially because there's only so much vets know and can do about renal failure. But I wanted to help responsibility, so I have some ground rules. The most important is that I won't advise anyone whose iguana is not under the care of a veterinarian. Also, I try to qualify every statement as advice from personal experience. And I try to keep the most detailed information out of public view by using e-mail.

I believe I have been able to help some people and the iguanas who own them. I try to evaluate my actions frequently, and sometimes I am my own worst critic. I also welcome constructive criticism from others.

Thanks for bringing this subject up today, HD. I agree that this is something we should keep in consideration.
