All you need is a towel, light if possible, to enable breathing.
What you do is throw it on top of him (gently), so he wont be able to see ya.
Grab a second small towel (i think they're called 'finger-towels') But it has to be wet, giving it a heavier weight. Put it on his tail, so that if he wants to whip ya, it'd be harder to and les painful for you as well.
BUT: be sure the water is luke-warm, remember, it's a reptie, not a mammal :)
Now you can pick him up without problems, and carry him like a baby all wrapped up.
Keep him blinded to calm him down. If animals see what is being done, they go nuts.
I know this technique from Nile Monitors and Solomon's Skink owners, who face similiar, if not worse, problems.
