Amy-
Regarding why some female Iguanas die after developing eggs.
Under normal circumstances, when a female develops eggs, if
there is not a male around to mate with her, the eggs will remain
unfertilized and she will re-absorb them instead of laying them.
However, when they are developing eggs, this process saps the calcium
from their bodies and uses it for egg development. During this time,
the Iguana can develop Metabolic Bone Disease due to the calcium
deficiency, as well as some liver problems. The solution is to make
sure that she is getting not only extra calcium in her diet,
but as much direct sunlight as possible so that she can
metabolize the calcium she eats.
