properly since he was very young. (He knocked a partition down, crawled over it to get to our female, and in the process knocked his basking light down on top of them to within 4-5 inches of their backs. Our setup has, of course, changed drastically since then.)
By the time I saw what had happened, they both had a pretty good case of 'sunburn'. I treated them with extra liquids and aloe. Bother recovered fine.
Teh only exception is that the first five spikes on Bad Boy's back are nearly impossible to get to shed properly. When I see that he is getting ready to shed, I try to soak him more often (using iZ 'magic' cape idea), increase his fluids and try massaging the spikes gently.
I think the thing that helps most with his spike shed is: after he soaks for a long while, I use a very soft washcloth to massage the spikes from the base to the tip. It really seems to help. The worst part of it is that you have to really be diligent with it. Once the spike dries out.....that's it. There's very little else that can be done.
(I have also tried snipping the old shed to give him a head start with the new growth and have not run into problems.)
I know it is really worrisome. Best of luck!
