Unfortunately, bonsai will not last too long indoors, only a few months, no matter how good your setup is. They are TREES, and need everything that a large tree would experience in it's habitat. Full sun, daylength, day/night temp, the changing seasons. They need correct watering, and trimming, to stay proper bonsai. I can't tell you whether they are poisonous without knowing what kind of tree they are. Most common "cheap" bonsai are junipers, which have fragrant resinous sap similar to pine sap, I am sure those are not safe to eat. Also avoid small sago palms, they are extremely toxic. Anything green may potentialy be eaten.
Make doubly sure anything breakable (pots/fountains?) is sitting on the floor, and use HEAVY rocks, Ig's are surprisingly powerfull and persistant. You really can't controll what they decide to climb on.
