No , I did not hear her lecture or answers that she was giving to customers. I am working purely from the statement that she gave that she was a "herpetologist". I believe that she did mention that she had a snake pet.

However, regardless of whether I agreed with her statements or not, the fact of the matter is, what was her criteria for stating ( loudly ) that she was a herpetologist ?

It is much like the title: engineer. So does that mean that somewhere somehow somebody gave that title out of the blue ? Or, does it mean that you got a AA, Bachelors, MSEE or other degree in some venue of engineering ? What it a "earned" title or a "given" title. Kinda like "consultant" which in the real world mostly means that you are unemployed.
