If there is one good thing I can find to say about my local "pet" $store, it is that they do not sell animals of any kind, except maybe the invertabrates, to children without a phone call to the parents for permission. This still does not alleviate the problem of children getting animals they cannot take care of, but it helps a very tiny bit, which is better than none at all. Perhaps you can suggest such a thing to the manager (or whoever) when (if?) you go back to that $tore. Stress the well-being of the animals, because if that doesn't work, nothing will.
