when iZ 1st came to live with me, i made a habit of "playing with" his toes (and tail!) whenever i picked him up .. or even if i just went over to his basking spot to visit ... consequently, it doesn't bother him if his tail is touched (as in checking sheds) and it's NEVER been a problem to trim his nails .... don't know if that approach might work to start now on an older ig????? wouldn't hurt to try ... i wait til it's almost bedtime when he's FULL and tired and more willing to just hang out and lay on my chest and i just use a people nail clipper (the big size) same as i do on my bunny .... i use an emory board to file any rough/sharp points away .... sometimes when he has less patience than usual, (especially during mating season when you REALLY WANT them to have short/dull nails!), i end up doing it every night and just do 1-2 feet a night... also sometimes i can get away with filing the needle-like point only ... but that means checking every single night ....
i used to use those dog nail trimmers you can find in about any pet supply aisle, and they work good but seem to get very dull, very fast and felt like a needless expense ....
good luck to all!! REALLY makes me appreciate iZ's patience with me!!!!! *grin*
:P + :)
