Lindsay,
You have my respect for asking questions before buying an iguana!!
As with other post, there's plenty of unwanted iguanas out there needing a good home and I would recommend getting one of those over buying one. Here's the Pro's and Con's about the above.
Adopting:
PRO: You can choose male or female and find out alot of important information about the iguana, getting an older one. Above all, you would be helping an iguana that really needs a good home.
CON: You will not experence the early age of an iguana.
Buying:
PRO: You will get to raise an iguana from an iglet up
CON: You have no choice on a male or female, since it takes about a 1 1/2 to know if it's a male or female. You will spend more money with a iglet, since you will need the following:
Full check up at a reptile Vet. A new cage about every 6 months for the first 2 years. And the most important is that you won't know if the iguana will be mellow or mean ( I got Harry when he was around 1 1/2 to 2 years old.....6 months later he turned into a monster. You can't trust him from one day to the next. Can you live with one like that for 15 to 20 years???
Speaking of life span.....can you care for this iguana, NO matter what, for 15 to 20 years???? If you want to go on vacation, do you know of anyone to watch the iguana?? We have a sitter, but if we didn't.....we wouldn't be going on vacation!! Not sure if you're in school or not, but if you are, you have to consider a few more things, I hear all the time people needing to get rid of their iguana because they're either going off to college or they're done with college and they have a new job and no time for the iguana.
This next statement will probably upset a few people but for the most part it's true. Iguanas are for older people......people that are done running around and more settled in. Iguanas don't take change well and you should consider this before getting one too. If you're moving all the time, this can possibly stress your iguana. And if you're going out partying with friends, it can definitely cut into that time, caring for an iguana. They shouldn't get fed or lights turned on when you get out of bed.....if you're a late sleeper.
All of these things should be taken into consideration before buying or adopting.....look down the road some.....and think......can I and will I care for this iguana, not matter what???
Best wishes and if you decide you'd like to get one let me know.....I'll get with you and line you up with a rescue group.
