In Reply to: Speaking of Unpredictable DOUBLE D BITE ME TWICE TODAY msg posted by Christy on May 04, 2001 at 09:52:52:

isn't Double D too young for mating season behaviors??? sorry ~ am really bad at remembering every ig's age! ...

as far as 'is it still breeding season?' ...
there's no *set* time ... there's only very general guidelines for when most igs start + stop ... it's gonna vary from ig to ig ~ depends on things like what part of the world the ig originally comes from, it's health history, it's current state of health, the environment it's in now, etc. etc. etc.!

iZ decided long ago, that he will follow NO such guidelines! when everyone else is talking about hormonal changes in their igs, iZ is behaving normally ... when every other ig is done with the madness, THEN iZ starts up ... usually in May or June ... it's rather cool this year + am wondering if he won't start a bit later than usual ...

just cuz everyone else is done with mating season, doesn't mean you get to be too! *grin*

as far as other reason she bit???
her health is definitely something to consider ... sometimes they're trying to tell us something's wrong + they just don't know how to do it ...

chances are that you startled her ~ maybe she was more 'zoned out' than you realized???
could be that she's just testing the boundaries + seeing if biting will get whatever it is she wants ~ or stop what she doesn't want! same as kids, gotta try it once in a while + make sure the rules haven't changed!

could be she was having a bad day in general ... then you gotta search + see if you can figure out *why* ... too warm? too cool? too rainy?? some things you can regulate, others ya can't but it helps on down the road if you can figure out WHAT stresses her ... (iZ doesn't like loud thunder ~ i know to approach carefully during a storm cuz he's already a bit stressed ...)

ok ... about *you* ... (oh oh ... i sense the MOM in me readdy to spout off ...)
Betadine solution should be a priority item in your first aid kit ... for use on your ig as well as on YOU ... ANY ig bite should be scrubbed out with full-strength betadine ~ even the sweetest ig has some baaaaad bacteria in their mouth and anti-bacterial soap is a good *start*, but follow it up with betadine ... and when i say "scrub", i MEAN *Scrub* the wound, don't just pour it on ...
even a little bite has major potential for infection so DO keep a close eye on it and if it's not healing as expected, get to the doc + tell 'em *gram-negative bacteria* ... (you need a different kind of anti-biotics depending on if it's gram positive or negative)

ok , mom-type lecture on preventative medicine over! LOL

now ...

LMAO that you think Double D's teeth are sharp!!! that's nothin' compared to what they're gonna be when she's full grown! in my best old army veteran voice: "EH! you think THAT'S a wound!?!?!? c'mere! i'll show you a REAL wound!!!! LOL ...

just goes to emphasize the importance of learning your ig's language + learning to understand what their body language + color changes are saying ... there ARE exceptions, but for the most part, most igs WILL have tried to warn you away before they bite ... usually ...

*yawn* ... i rambled myself bored! must be nap time ...

Bon.
