The duffle bag or gym bag is usually long enough to carry an ig. Unless they are very comfortable in going with you everywhere, I find that they get a little freaked out at new people and places. The bag usually has a netting opening somewhere for breath-ability, allows some movement, and they feel more secure in a kind of dark hide spot.
You may want to try putting him in the bag a couple of times before the real visit to the vet. Also put a t-shirt in the bottom that has your scent on it. Maybe one you have worn while holding your ig. Then it will have both yours and his scent on it, which will probably be comforting.
