You have lots of reading ahead of you! :) Your little guy probably seems kinda calm right now because he is scared to death of you. He's not sure whether you are a friend or foe yet. When they are small and they feel threatened, their main defense is to "play dead" as you described. Get ready for a change though...as he gets settled in and realizes you aren't going to eat him, he will get a little more squirmy on ya.
