Since you use chmicals in your yard ...I wouldn't use any plants as food from it. Unless you stop using herbi/pesti cides altogether for a year, then start to use them....Hibiscus is hibiscus....having the same properties as the ones in Florida. Perhaps buy a couplea bushes plant them or container grow them in a "safe" area away from chmicals. I harvest dandelions from my neighbors yard (they patiently wait for me to come weed their yard every couplea weeks)....my neighbors have really old tortoises so I dig em up some at the same time. They never knew dandelions were one of the best food for a herbivore! Anyway....really take a look at your
location.....tons of free food! City parks, neighbors yards, for dandelion, hibiscus,geraniums, cactus, prickly pear. Most places like parks do not use chemicals for their plants (may use reclaimed water but not a problem), ask your neighbors if you can harvest dandelion from their yards....especially if they are older neighbors....they'll think your an angel!
