He does this whether he is in or out of the cage though-- it is pretty warm in the room-- probably 85 degrees or so at night and he sleeps outside the cage at night. I turn the fans off at night. When in the cage in the day, the fans are on in the room and the temp in close to 90 degrees in the cage-- the heat light shuts off when it gets too hot. He prefers the cooler part of the cage away from the light (and on top of his stone water dish) This does make me wonder if he is feeling too warm, but he never gapes or acts uncomfortably hot. And he chooses his own night spot (the top of his cage is warm from a night heat light inside the cage and it is fairly warm inside the room as I mentioned)
I will try to take out the heat lamp at night and possibly the heat lamp during the day to see if he stops doing this.
This sounds like a possibility since it is August in FL and if we expel salt from sweat, perhaps they would do the same-- although I am used to the gaping mouth and turning pale to show they are too hot!
