Iggmom,as best I can evaluate your Igg from our dscussions,I am hypothisizing that perhaps, the dead tail tip, which was hanging in there for four years, was broken sometime recently, maybe from her tail whipping post surgery.Other possible causes of necrosis include low temp.'s,which decreases peripheral circulation, leading to death of the extremities, possibly this was the cause four years ago? Many times necrosis is attributed to bacterial infections, which may arise if the tail is often wet, whether through too humid of conditions,or poor husbandry(which I'm sure doesn't apply here).Cancer, bite wounds, and blood parasites are also possible causes.
Anyways,as we discussed prior to this post,it is probably nothing a bit of neosporin won't fix(as mentioned in previous post)but a visit to your vet,is definiately your best bet, because,
depending on the cause, necrosis can lead to amputation of the tail, and it's always better to be safe than sorry.
