Welcome to the wild & wacky world of iguana lovers! We're always full of questions ourselves. In regard to best substrate, you are liable to get a lot of varying answers. I think there are a lot of personal preferences. I've asked this one myself in the past & have tried some of the suggestions but always go back to what I was originally using.
Kitty litter - I would NOT recommend it if it were the kind that has fresheners, etc. in it. There is a product designed initially as kitty litter called CARE FRESH. It is now being touted as good reptile substrate. It is like recycled newspaper and is allegedly non-toxic & allegedly will pass thru systems if accidentally ingested. I am currently using this for our bearded dragon but I feed him in a separate tank because I continue to be way of just how digestible this really is and he eats crickets & could easily scoop up a mouthful of this stuff.
Some folks like newspaper, butcher paper, unprinted newspaper. I used newspaper during a period of recovery for our female iguana. It did the job; was easy to pick up and put clean in; but it wasn't very pretty. LOL
Paper towels (white only) - This is good when you have a little guy and really want to keep an eye on their output and are being careful about them accidentally ingesting substrate. However, once you have to move on to the larger tanks/cages it becomes way too expensive.
I have used a product called Kaytee All Natural Walnut Litter for Birds. This is crushed walnut shells. I will tell you that some people believe this product can cause impaction. I have not had an incident of this with our iguanas and have used it for 4 years. However, in an effort to be honest, I will confess that we did have an amieva impact on it. This is why we only use it for the iguanas and not on any of our smaller reptiles. This product is also dust producing & it needs to be misted down to keep the dust down.
I've only covered the products that we have used for our iguanas. Hopefully, there will be others with more suggestions.
Thank you for taking this little one in and I hope that he has a happy life with your family!
