Everytime I ever link to the SPSAC from any of my messages I always get at least a few letters from people who are saying that I am unfairly judging all pet stores. I just wanted to clear that untruth up. The SPSAC stands for Stop Pet Store ABUSE not Stop Pet Stores. We are not in any way a pet store hate group and we do not want to stop the sales of herps (although I'M against the sale of iguanas now). In fact, most of our members are employees or owners of pet stores. Here is a little background and other info about the SPSAC:
On November 5, 1999, Lexi Phillipi walked into one of her local pet stores to find that employees were giving out wrong information, neglecting animals, and violating several laws. After receiving virtually no assistance from the authorities, she decided on that same day to form the Stop Pet Store Abuse Club. The SPSAC now passes out caresheets, rescues animals, and reports uncooperative stores. The club currently has three co-founders - Lexi Phillipi, Randilyn Halvorsen, and Peggy Hargis - and a large number of dedicated members all aiming towards the ultimate goal of stopping pet store abuse. The actual mission of the SPSAC is as follows:
“While some pet stores actually care for their animals (in an emotional and physical sense), most don’t. Alot of pet shop owners watch their animals die of disease and/or injuries while misinforming prospective owners, sending animals to a slow death due to that wrong information. The Stop Pet Store Abuse Club’s purpose is to get more pet store owners to learn before they teach and prevent the horrible but widely unknown abuse that occurs in most pet stores.”
