In Reply to: I'm looking for that discussion on yougurt and good bacteria posted by Christy on June 09, 2000 at 14:20:47:

i think it delas with the usual problem and concern of salmonella.
as you know, salmonella is mainly transmitted through liquids, in most herp cases, blood and feces.
because the bacteria resides in the gut, it is crucial that the animal has "good" bacteria rather than "bad" ones.
YOGURT is a good choice to clean up the digestive system, *** BUT *** : it is not certain whether iguanas and the like can TOLERATE lactose.
once in a while could be ok, but no-one knows.
YET, TEGUS are known to enjoy melted ice-cream, so igs could tolerate yogurt.

Have you heard of Marie Eguro? Her page:
"Marie Eguro's Sammy Page" (search it on Yahoo) contains info (i think, though not sure) on an ANTIBIOTIC that can help SUPPRESS and almost eliminate salmonella. Her iguanas tested negative, YET a small % of salmonella can still reside in the animals.

good luck with your research, i hope this helped you a bit.
ci@o!

Ig Joe

: Can anyone tell me what the main title was of that discussion on lack of good bacteria and then how the yogurt was used? Thanks a bunch. I may need it for my young beardie. I want to do a archive search.
