Its prolly me ....Ive posted a few times about using sterile potting soil as substrate. I got an e-mail from one of the Vets at Long Beach Animal Hospital (Doug Mader's old stomping grounds) after I inquired about the use of potting soil as substrate mentioned at a particular LBAH under iguana husbandry/diseases (link below...pics are very graphic so make sure you're not eating while exploring this site;-)
Not only did the vet say it was ok...he said sterile potting soil as a substrate was HIGHLY recommended because of maintaining humidity. This substrate is recommended for egging igs...but the kind with vermiculite in it to keep the soil moist. The sterile potting soil bags I buy...do not contain vermiculite....(I always worried about my igs ingesting it)....sterile potting soil is easily digested (according to the vet)so no worry of impactions if ig should lick it. But it sure can get messy...if you have equipment like humidifiers in enclosures , cuz igs occasionally will scratch at soil and send dirt flyin! So far Im very pleased with the potting soil. I pick out pieces of shed, any food one of my igs might have dropped, rake it out a bit, looks as good as the first day I put it in. Prolly going on 6 months maybe...still haven't had the need to change it. Hope this helps some
Gina
