your worry about the suicidal leap of faith on the grill is right, but here's the thing:
Most animals fear fire (ie, flames).
i keep the flames on the front a bit higher, to keep him at bay, plus, the hickosy/mesquite chips cause a bit of smoke to make him think twice about closing in.
when he's on my shoulder, i keep away from the smoke etc, and when i gotta 'cook' or remove/add meat, i place him on his basking pole.
