I know of a couple people who handle their reptiles without even washing their hands (Thinking "*My* ig doesn't have salmonella!"). They have not contracted Salmonella -- but my reasoning for that is that they have been *unclean* all of their lives and have developed an immunity to it!!
However, my two baby bothers (twins) got it. They were sick, and hospitalized for a day or two and then were fine. I do not recall anyone being overly upset about the salmonella except for my mother. She was told it was from something that was not clean, and she was a neurotic housecleaner with rules like no shoes allowed in the house, no playing anywhere but the playroom in the basement, - you get the picture. No one at that time (old lady here) made the connection with reptiles. So, we never thought about the fact that the babies ALWAYS crawled over to my floor level(you're not putting THOSE things on a table!!!) turtle cage...and used to kiss them and LICK them...they liked their soft underbellies!!! But never got sick - only the once. And come to think of it, when Donna's little brother bit her turtle in half, he never got sick either.
Please understand that I am not underestimating the seriousness of salmonella, nor the fact that ALL reptiles carry it. I am trying to point out that if you are careful and responsible about cleanliness, as you obvioulsy are, there should be no difficulty. And at toddler age - supervise, as of course you would anyway if the ig was out the same time as the toddler.
Congrats on your baby - they are so special, and gone so fast. Appreciate! And congrats on being a great ig mom!
