i never thought *i'd* have this problem since my son is grown up ... and then i found myself to be the granma of his 2yo step-daughter *and* they just gave me a brand new grandbaby ... *grin*
as far as indirect contact affecting the baby ... until it's crawling around on it's own, that should be fairly easy to control ... don't put the baby anywhere the ig has been, like on the couch, etc ... at my house, it's a bit easier than it will be for you ... i usually don't handle iZ when the kiddies are around ... but if i do, i go so far as to change shirts after handling him ... like if they're here + it's iZ's bath/poop time ... i take care of iZ, get him on his basking shelf with his supper and then wash up + change clothes ...
i think you made an excellent point about the chicken! igs aren't the only thing that can share diseases ... the key is to be educated + use common sense and there shouldn't be a problem!
everyone in my family is instructed to *immediately* see a doctor if they get diarrhea and tell the doc that it may be salmonella ... that way, if it does happen, it's treated right away and shouldn't be a problem ... salmonella *can* be life-threatening in small children *if* it's not immediately diagnosed + treated ...
i really think that as long as you use lots of common sense, you + yours will be fine! and this is coming from an over-protective, paranoid grandma!
very best wishes!!!
