necessary to maintain the health of your iguana.
Do not use reptile bark, rocks, pebbles, wood chips or any other small substrate, with the possible exception of alfalfa pellets. All of these can be ingested and lead to fatal impactions. I do not prefer using alfalfa pellets because they have a distinct odor and it is difficult to tell what area needs removed when soiled.
I have heard others say they use paper towels, unprinted paper, butcher paper and the like.
For my iguana's cage, I use indoor/outdoor carpeting (the kind that resembles astroturf). It is easily disinfected and is not slick for the ig, allowing him more secure footing.
As to 'potty training'.... I have had Bad Boy for almost 2 years. (I got him as a hatchling.) I have trained him to use the shower stall for his bathroom area. It is easy to disinfect and readily accessible. He **fingers crossed** almost never slips up.
When I first started training him, I put him in the tub with a couple of inches of water at the same time each day. The water encourages defecation. After he does his business, praise him, give him a treat...whatever makes him happy. Just be consistent, using the same words/rewards each time.
If you have been reading this forum, you know that there are many igs who need homes. Although having an ig from hatchling stage may seem to be a 'stronger' bonding experience, please keep in mind that an ig rescued from an abusive, neglectful environment may well be a more affectionate pet in the long run.
Another thing I would like to express is (and I am NOT flaming you, just hear me out) that we are a family on this forum and you will find it difficult to get people to cooperate in assisting you if you disrespect any of its members.
Harry's Dad has a wealth of information that you would find very useful, as do many others here.
Last words.........please, don't mess with my family.
Good luck in your information-gathering.
