CALGARY SUN (Alberta) 21 May 00 Leapin' Lizard: Iguana Rescued From Tree (Nadia Moharib)
Fire crews, in an unusual mission, rescued a large, green lizard from the top of a pine tree near a Calgary home yesterday afternoon.
"It's kind of embarrassing. I didn't ever expect to need this kind of help," Jonathon Tromposch, owner of the nearly four-foot long iguana, said yesterday as a gloved firefighter used an aerial to retrieve the scaly runaway.
As his master slept, "Iggie" fled his home -- which he shares with two cats and two dogs -- at 10632 Maple Glen Cres. S.E. using a cat-door to make the getaway.
Tromposch saw Iggie "sitting on top of his computer" at about 4:30 a.m.
When he awoke several hours later, a search led him to find the three-year-old, 8-lb. Iggie basking some 10 metres up a pine tree near the home.
"He decided to run up a tree. He's just enjoying the day," the 19-year-old said.
"He is a really friendly iguana. He's not the kind that bites."
Fire department Insp. Joe Robertson said there was "no problem" getting Iggie to surrender.
"He was pretty docile," he said. "We get (calls) for the occasional animal up a tree, cats, birds . . . but I've never heard of a lizard."
Iggie's adventures left him unharmed and even a little pampered.
"He was covered in tree-sap so I gave him a bath," Tromposch said. "He's doing just fine, sitting in his cage warming up."
