I, like cirsisue, have started out by touching all the way to the tail tip with my 3 igs. And they, too, have gotten used to it, even if they are still a sensitive about it at times. Even my little baby, whose tip was infected on the half tail it had left, is getting a little better at it. I'm still going slow because I can surely understand the poor little ig's fear of losing it again. I try to assure him (her?)that I will not take the beautiful tail, but I'm not so sure that makes him anymore confident :-)
Anyway, I am confident that over time, this ig will get used to it too. And the main reason I think it so important to get them used to it is that there will probably (likely) come a time/s that you will have to help with the tail shed, which is much easier if they are not extremely sensitive about their beautiful tails. The tail tip can be especially stubborn about coming off, but is dangerous to the ig if left on. I encourage you to continue with the process, however slow and grueling. Your ig will thank you, even if only in secret. Good luck.
