Iguanas are complete and total vegetarians! Animal products of any kind have no place in their diet. It can cause all sorts of problems, especially with their kidneys. Old, outdated information says that that they eat bugs and such when they are juveniles, and then switch to vegetaianism. This has been proven as untrue. They are vegetairnas all through their life. Some older books also state that 5 - 10 % animal protein is acceptable, but it has now been proven that is also bad for an iguana's health, especially once they start to become older, around 6 years. Iguanas need a totally herbivourous diet, and that also means no dairy products or eggs. They need leafy greens and nutritious vegetables.

Most iguanids are herbivorous, or at least mostly so. Even some who are considered omnivorous should only be fed a very small amount of invertibre protein (ie bugs). If you want an animal that will devour mice, I suggest you steer clear of the iguanids as a whole, and stick with monitors and tegus and other carnivorous reptiles. Sorry to disappoint you.

For more reading about animal protein issues with green iguanas, check out this hyper link below the post. It'll ptobably convince you.

: I was wondering if iguanas could eat meat on a regular basis? Im a big fan of the meat eating lizards such as tegus and monitors. I alway like the look of iguanas but could never get into them. I always know them for being plant eaters but this certain web site proved me wrong http://www.thesnake.org/feeding/feeding.html I did read that rhino iguanas' (which I highly like but can't afford) could have some meat in there diet but on the web site they say that its a common green iguana. I would like to know your opinion about this common green iguana eating a mouse. If common greens cant eat mice or shouldn't please let me know those species of iguanas that can have/tolerate some meat in their diet.
: Thanks a million for your time
