First of all - please don't purchase an iguana. Adopt one. Your local herpetological society (not to mention iguana rescues across the country) would be more than happy to help you adopt an iguana. I feel so strongly about this - it's like the puppy thing. People want the "puppy" experience, which usually ends up being the "puppy nightmare" for the unprepared, while thousands of perfectly good adult dogs are euthanized because they aren't cute any more. There are plenty of nice adult iguanas out there who need a loving home. If you buy - you support the retail trade that is the cause of the current iguana mess.

Secondly, buy or make a cage - at *least* 5 feet tall, 2 feet deep, 3 feet wide. A tank is no place for an iguana, regardless of the tank size.

I can tell you as someone who started with snakes, added non-iguana lizards and then finally ended up with an iguana that they are very, very high maintenance. Snakes are great - you can go on vacation even up to 2 weeks and not worry about them. But when you go on vacation and you have an iguana you need a babysitter to feed them every day, make sure they have clean water, etc.

I love my iguana, but when he eventually dies of old, old age, I doubt I would get another one. I want to go on vacation!!! I want to sleep in on the weekends! I want to have scar-free body parts!!! 8-)

Just my $0.02.

: Hello all,
: I've long been into snakes but am considering purchasing an Iguana. I am quite aware of how difficult they are to own, but I just love them. Anyways, I was wondering about how long i could house an iguana in a 70 gallon lizard lounge aquarium(I would be buying a baby). Thank You.
