Stays clean , aids with retaining humidity, if ingested not harmful, they love digging in it. Ive had soil from large bag of STERILE (no bugs, pesticides, weeds, herbicides) potting soil in each of my igs enclosures for almost 4 months....pick out old shed skin, kind of rake it out....and looks as good as 1st day I put it in. Only problem so far: female ig begins scratching and the dirt goes flying...and had to make a "cover" type deal for the humidifier....that sure was a MESS! If I remember right sterile potting soil for a large 10? lb bag is like $5.00.....sure saves a ton of time ...no more hosing off in/outdoor carpet....newspapers...etc.
