I have stained all my reptile cages, inside and out... use a WATER based stain. I have never had a problem with this, and have used it on chameleon, iguana, monitor, adn uromastyx cages.
Mimwax makes a water based stain....
Of course let the stain dry completely, adn no longer smell before you use the cage

all, I am building a cage for my iguana, and I've been informed that staining would cause problems for my iguana, so I've decided to not stain the INSIDE and stain the outside. I'm going to do the inside like the cage on this link has it minus the circulating water.
