For general information, we stain and paint all of our reptile cages, inside and out. We use any kind of wood stain and we use a good strong latex enamel.
After everything has completely dried and there is no ordor at all, which is usually about 3 to five days, I put a complete coat of Varethane clear satin finish polyurethane over all the paint and stain. I do this five to six times. I clear over in the morning and by the next morning I clear over again. This takes as many day as the number of coats. After the final coat, I let it dry for 2 to 3 days. I also use heat lamps inside to accelerate the drying process.
By using good quality paint, I don't get flakes or weak spots. You can hit it with a hammer and it doesn't come off. The many layers of polyurethane prevents the igs or other lizards from scaping it off, plus the clear is so hard, you can't scratch it anyway.
This has worked, again and again with no ill effects and I have heard of other's using the same technique in long term situations, again with no ill effects.
