I can only speak from my own experience, but my Ig, Lemmy, used to do the same thing. I would put his food bowl on his shelf with him, but it inevitably wound up dumped on the cage bottom, knocked down while he was turning around near his bowl, or on occassion from pushing it as he ate out of it. This may be what is happening with yours....?
