In Reply to: Sad news...we lost Q posted by T and Q on April 22, 2000 at 11:24:24:

: Q died during the night. When I put him in his enclosure after an unsuccessful meds session and bath, I was very worried about him. Several hours later, he was still lying in the same position. I considered rushing him to the emergency clinic for the third time in four days, but I knew there wasn't much more they could do.

: I spoke to another vet yesterday about Q. He reviewed Q's history and his recent xrays and blood tests and came to much the same conclusions as our regular vet. Simply put, Q's systems were shutting down due to a strong infection (most likely in the liver) and widespread edema (especially heavy around the lungs). Q was diagnosed with kidney damage a year and a half ago. He almost died then, but we managed to turn him around. But it seems that the poorly-functioning kidneys placed great stress on his systems, and he simply reached a point where the stress was too much to take.

: I hope I don't sound as if I gave up on Q. I didn't. We really tried to turn him around again, but this time our efforts just couldn't reverse the process. Through all his troubles, Q was always a fighter. You could just tell that he wanted to live. This time, however, there just wasn't any fight left in him.

: I am devastated at Q's loss. It is especially hard knowing that I caused his problems. I got Q as a hatchling more than six years ago and followed the widely-held belief that iguanas needed 10 percent animal protein in their diet. I've still got the books and vet care sheets with the bad information. I suppose I could be let off the hook, except I took those stupid documents as gospel and never looked for updated care information. That was my true mistake.

: I took Q to the vet this morning for a necropsy. I'll post the results when I get them. Q will be cremated and his ashes brought home.

: Q was really a wonderful iguana. He loved to be rubbed and massaged. He was sweet even during breeding season and was incredibly patient when it came to taking his meds and his baths, his two least favorite things. He loved to hang out on his specially-built window ledge and watch the world go by. For excitement, he'd wander the house, climb up and down the stairs, and do other silly iguana things. I already miss him terribly.

: I want to thank everyone again for all the advice and support we've received in the last couple of days and over the last year and a half. As difficult as this has been, and will continue to be for me, it would have been even worse if we hadn't had such caring people to give us the benefit of their knowledge, experience and compassion.

: My best to you and your green friends.

: Now, without Q, I guess I'm just T.
