: : A really good friend of mine just died and he owned an Iguana. I am now taking the Iguana so that it won't be given to a pet store, but, the only problem is that I really don't know a whole lot about Iguanas. It is about 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet long and has a cage that is about 6'H 8'L 4'W. I have been told to feed it lettuce about twice a week and to keep a full bowl if Iguana food from the pet store and lots of water in the cage at all times. If anyone has any helpful hints or advice it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Phil

: Your new pet is a very demanding animal, but also a very rewarding one.
: You need to keep the cage at 80-90 degrees
: farenheit, and it needs to stay at 60-80% humidity. Your iguana
: needs lots of branches and things to climb on. I find
: that feeding my iguana a shreded mixture of various vegetables
: and vitamens and such is just as balanced a diet as commercial
: iguana food, and much less expensive.

: Your iguana also needs a lot of attention and handling
: time from you. At least a half an hour a day. Even if
: it is just letting the iguana ride around on your shoulders
: while you attend to your routines.

: But all this is not even the begining of the care your
: iguana requires. There is much more you must learn, but
: your intentions seem good and I am sure you will have
: a long and happy relationship with your iguana, just so long as
: you do the research needed for this complex animal.

: I wouldn't suggest books...unless they are were published very recently
: even those from a year or two ago contain out-dated information that
: could prove to be very detrimental to your iguana's health.

: I would suggest starting at http://www.sonic.net/~melissk/ig_care.html.
: Read Mellisa Kaplan's iguana care and socialization article, and everything
: else on the page for that matter. It is some of the
: best and most current information avalible.

: Good Luck and enjoy your new friend.
