maybe a few other questions before we jump to conclusions and rip his head off?
For instance:
I keep MY Igs in a repetarium. Why? Because they are babies, and it would be dangerous to let them free roam at this stage of their life. So I got a nice 100 gallon repatarium to hold them over a bit. If you must know, this is their SECOND home - they started life with me in a 32 gallon lizard lounge. It was perfect for them when they were hatchlings. And THIS is the key. It's not about "Hey! Look, he posted about keeping his Ig in a closet, so let's not give him any advice, let's just jump down his throat and try and chase him off! That way, he'll be afraid to come back, and he won't EVER learn anything about Igs, and his Ig will suffer for years and finally die from his ignorance!"
Thanks, Ally's Mom, for giving us one more Iguana horror story, rather then helping us educate a new Iguana owner. I can only hope that you will NOT keep up your good work.
Josh:
You have to be sure that you are providing the animal with enough room - and as the animal gets bigger, that means so must the cage. The rule of thumb is that the minimum requirenment is a cage *at least* twice the length, once the width and three times the hight of the length of the Ig. And that's a BIG cage when you're talking about a 5 or 6 foot ig! For me, I've decided that it's just going to be easier for me to share MY cage (house ;) with my Igs when they've grown. In the meantime, buy cages that will last for at least a few months (and these things grow like mad!) and make sure you get them into a bigger cage *before* they've actually out grown their current one.
Pay no attention to Ally's Mom - we do, from time to time, get these "Iggier then thou" types in here that forgot that they too, at one time, had to learn how to properly care for their pets. Instead of being upset with her, pitty her for her unwillingness to share what she's learned from others WITH others, and keep coming back with those question! I, and many others here, will be happy to give you all the information we have, and even Ally's Mom may learn a thing or two before all the info's been exchanged!
Happy herping!
Dan
