We build our cage so that they are double walled for insulation of the internal heat. We use 2"x2" framing with a really thing "luan"(sic) which is a thin wood door covering. This keeps the cage lightweight. I had used particle board or plywood in the past, but that made the cage weigh a lot ( over 100 lbs ).
The luan can be stained or left as is. Either way you need to apply several coats of Varathane to protect the wood and keep the igs from scratching it.
I would note recommend any treated wood, cedar, redwood or any aromatic type wood that emits a smell or odor. Any wood that is stained or painted needs to have at least 3 coats or more of Varathane polyurethane coating .
