Flush the cut with a ton of running water. Look for any tiny little teeth that may have shed inside the cut. Linda...its so hard to know WHY...the only thing we can do is to KNOW our igs and to be super observant of changes in their posture and behavior. Its fight or flight w/ them...any defense response right. If Lizzy doesn't want to be held...since she can't tell you...she has to show it in her behavior....maybe she skirms, tries to get away, head-bob, to let you know she is uncomfortable about the situation and finds it threatening or stressful TO HER. Alot of subtler behaviors is a window into why or when a reptile will bite. You handled it well....not to relent ...IF Lizzy LEARNS that all she has to do to get her way is to bite...she will continue with THAT behavior and may not even bother to warn you next time. If you really really think hard about the antecedents to the bite....more than likely Lizzy told you already that she wasn't in the mood to be bothered. Live & learn ;-) Take care and NO papaya for Lizzy today...well maybe a little she was afterall just bein an iguana! You cannot tame instinct outta wild caught iguanas (or monitors! boy could I tell you some stories about this little foster monitor Ive got right now....& you think iguana's have sharp teeth!)
