I only have experience with my one ig, Sneakers, so I can only tell you what I did with him when he went through a little testing period. Sneakers bit a couple of times about 6 months ago. I think he was going through an adolescent period where he thought he was really big and bad. I would put my hand in the cage to pick him up and he would bite me. Surprised the heebie-geebies out of me. So I did what you did, pick him up anyway. But, it wasn't just to ride on my shoulder. If he showed any aggression to me at all he got continual petting, scratching, touching and feeling every part of his body. After about 15 minutes I put him back in his cage. Gave him a little time to settle down, about 1/2 hour, then repeated the whole process. He found out over a weekend that if he was bad he got a lot of what he didn't want at that time - ME. If he was good he got to roam around, explore, and mom gave him treats. Since that time he has chosen to be a good boy, well basically.
I think the hard part, at least for me was trying not to flinch, when he was aggressive. Its hard keeping sure and steady when you know the bite is coming. LOL. I figure it was better to teach him now that I won't go away then having to deal with this attitute in a full grown ig. If fact I not sure I would use this tactic in a 5 foot ig.
Joan (keep telling yourself that you are the big ig around here, dang it.)
