Believe me I sure know what your talking about. We have spent the last two weeks doing nothing but reading and obtaining information about iguanas and box turtle. I have a box turtle that I accuired a month ago from a pet store that told me all I neede was a 10 gal aquarium. Yeah right! The temperture in our house has increased tremendously. We have an air conditioner but since the arrival of the box turtle it is only put on when we can't stand it anymore. We are no stranger to taking care of animals and have dogs, cats, birds, and now the turtle. I don't think any animal is easy to take care of. They all have special needs, vet bills, food considerations and housing. Well maybe cats are kind of easy, if healthy. However, we rescued all of our cats from certain death and they were not healthy in the beginning. We also know that all of the animals cannot socialize together. The dogs and cats get along, but for the birds to come out and fly around the other animals must be outside. However, the birds and turtle can be out together. Everything must have daily exercise, handling and lots of love.

I apprieciate your concern as reading all the information I have come across given me and the family a good idea as to what is involved. We have noticed that the cages in the pet stores are a pretty bad sellection. We are going out today and pricing material for building a beginning cage that can last awhile and are already eyeing the closet which a 6ft front opening, 8ft tall, and 3ft deep, as being turned into a iguana home. I have explained and talked over with the kids what they would have to give up. They have agreed to look at the bearded dragons and see if this appeals to them before getting an iguana. Also we are starting to design outdoor enclosures for next spring.

A relative of ours has 2 baby igs and has just now rescued a 4ft female that was kept in bad conditions and isn't very friendly. She not happy yet. I was holding her when someone frighten her. Yes, I got clawed but I held my ground, holding her firmly, not crushing, until she calmed down while I petted and stroked her. He has a lot of work to do with her.

I understand your love for your ig and trying to warn people what they are getting into. Most of the sites you mentioned I have been their and read all the information that they have. I hadn't been to some and have spent all morning reading more and having the kids read it also. I use to think that I wanted to be a vet or own a pet store. The animals would be fine, but I couldn't stomach most of the people who want animals. I worked at the animal shelter for a while and began to dislike people and their attitudes towards their different animals. Most people do think animals can be easily disposed of. All of our animals are here to stay for their life time. I hope I have put some of your fears to rest. I do realize that until we actually have the iguana we won't really know what is involved, but we really do have a good idea. The whole family has talked about this new addition to the family and have all agreed.

Thank you for all the good information. I hope to become a member of this site and in time be able to offer advise to others like all of you do. I will let you know if we do get our new baby and how he/she is doing.

Thanks again. Joan
