As iZ's mom says "you have a lot of reading to do". Really check into everything before getting an iguana. We actually got an iguana for the kids (teenagers), but before we got one we purchased a couple of books and I think I was a regular on this forum for a couple of months reading everything posted and going to all links provided. We decided as a family we were ready for an iguana. What a joke!
Even with all the reading we did and asking questions didn't really prepare us. Its just one of those things you have to experience before getting the whole picture. Extremely time consuming, ig sitters are not readily available, razor sharp claws, tail whipping, biting, food preparation, training, housing (cage must be big, very very big), lighting (UVB), heating, and tearing the house apart to find the missing ig. Not to mention even finding a vet within 100 miles who knows the slightest thing about reptiles. If you do find one the bills can be 3 times as high of that of a cat or dog.
Don't get me wrong, I love our iguana (Sneakers) and wouldn't give him up for the world. He's quite the character. I can't even image life without the little poop now. I just want you to realize that your considering a wild animal and there is a lot of work involved, not to mention patience. We have put over 18 months of hard work and patience to get him to the medium size (32") pistol he is today. He will be 2 yrs old in July.
If you do decide to get an iguana (if I haven't scared) you off you ought to think about adopting an iguana. There are a lot of sweeties out there that need a good home.
Joan (sorry for the lecture, just want you to realize what your getting into)
