10% bleach solution is adequate. Air them out long enough so that you can't smell the bleach any more.
You can also use antibacterial soap, bake them, freeze them or let them sit out in the sun for a while. I've used branches all over the place - fresh cut and fallen - without doing anything to them and I haven't had any problems at all.
