Heres a little info from a pet shop owner, I bought All Creatures Great & Small in San Jose in February of 97' but have closed it since then because the rent was to high, but reopended at the Berryssa Flea Market, check pet abuse previous for another reply about flea mrkts)anyway the previous owners were so dirty that I almost didn't purchase the store, but did for the sake of the animals. If you walked in the rodent smell was so bad it would give you a headach, people would run in and out with there supplies the previous owners had no idea what they were doing and the husband was rude to his customers (I was surprised they had any). We purchased the place cleaned it up an dgave the reptiles a place up front near the sun, they had them in the dark by the fish room, the iggies, all sizes in a 40 gallon tank no light, improper food, and mites galor, believe me when I say it was a mess, Now in regards to the Humane Socity, yes and no they care. To be able to have a Pet Store in the State of California you must pass there examination, (how the previous owners did it is beyound me). All cages must be clean, well venilated, well lit, animals must have fresh water and be fed daily, NO OVER CROWDING ALLOWED!!!! Puppies must have there breeder listed, there AKC number, shot records handy, and where the animal was purchased etc. You had to post on the outside of the business a number to be reached incase of an emergency and the stores name and address, granted this is done here I'm not sure about other states, but even here there are those who do get away with abuse as did the previous owners. Also I wish they WOULD police the flea market a little better that way those of us who care wouldn't be lumped in with those who don't.
