I agree with john. i have no experience with the san diego zoo, but i and at least one other person i know disagree on how the phoenix zoo
does some things with herps, in particular their chuck diet. also i have seen kaplan's care sheet and i consider it just the bare minimum of
info. i am just curious, how many of you guys out there actually keep desert iguanas, and have you bred them before, and/or observed them in the
wild? i don't want to step on toes here, but i don't misinformation getting around. the bottom line is that especially hatchling and baby dipsos thrive
on a balanced diet of greens, and a smaller proportion of insects. also, gravid females seem to do well on a bit of insect protein. when i had an outdoor pen
of desert igs, collareds, and chucks, you would be surprised to see what happened when i tossed a handful of grasshoppers in there. more often than not the collareds
were too slow and the igs and chucks fought for the grasshoppers!!

: Be careful while reading these care sheets, I have read several, including the ones presented to me. They conflict with each other. Desert igs are omnivorous especially the juvies. As for adults, dissections have also revealed a relatively small amount of insects in the gut. I don't know why authors like to confuse us like this. Pertaining to Babyherps comments on water soaking. My book at home "Lizards in Captivity," says water in the enclosure will lead to a rapid deline. They get all their moisture from the greens they consume. I do provide a shallow drinking vessel however, which is recommended by a different care sheet. I am using my best judgment here. Realize... I could post my own caresheet, and that would be scary!! Don't rely too much on these caresheets, unless you know the provider.
