Cuz the vertebra becomes more solid and fuses as they get older ...babies do it as a defense mechanism especially in the wild...they can just drop it...to AVOID an attack from a predator....NOT only when being attacked. Drop & evade.....the predator checks out the whipping piece of tail...and off the baby ig goes completely unharmed...wagging his stump behind him....all the way home!
