Others have covered it below (respiratory infection or overheated) are experiences I've had with mine when the mouth is open.

It seems from the others, that there's do it more frequently in the heat than mine did-- mine was very overheated when he did this and needed to cool off. I would keep a close eye on him because if he starts looking distressed or turning pale-- he is in danger. They should always be able to get to a cooler spot. I've heard of one who died from being baked to long in the FL sun so I'm extra careful.
