In Reply to: Need help building a cage... posted by Matt Cooksey on March 18, 2000 at 02:15:06:
: I just bought my iguana (haven't named her yet) from the pet store two days ago. Right now she is in a twenty gallon tank and hardly has enough room to move being that she is nearly 3 feet long (from snout to end of tail). I only keep her in it at night so I don't feel too bad about it. Anyway...what kind of cage should i build and what works best ( glass, wire, etc...) and how much is it going to cost me? I was planning on making a 6 foot tall dresser type thing with dimensions of 6 ft tall x 5 feet wide x 4 feet deep. Is this big enough so i won't have to replace it when she gets full grown? I plan to let her out frequently.
: well, we are waiting to hear what you guys have done and found to work best.
: PS. she is very friendly and seems almost tame. Is this common? I take her out of the cage and at first she spazzes out but then hops on my shoulder and goes to sleep. She hasn't bitten me, although she does open her mouth slightly sometimes as if she is about to. She does whip her tail at me but not often.

Caging can be tough, I'm going through it now!
I'm enclosing a corner of a room so two walls are already up.
It will be 7X4X7 and that should be ample size to hold mine for life, but
I will let him out daily! I am using a wood frame, plywood about 3 foot up all around and
plastic mesh the rest of the way up and the top! I'm doing the 3 foot plywood deal so maybe
he won't nose grind and climb as bad! But temp would also be a concern, depending on the room!
I would have enclosed with plexi-glass if anywhere else in my house, but this room will have reptiles only(2 55G and a 30G aquarium,(8 turtles) Leopard Gecko(20GA) and 2 mini-crabs(10G) and ZIGGI THE GREAT!!)
so I can control the temp just in that room! Good Luck, them caging links will give you many ideas!
