Mites

Can anyone tell me how to tell for sureif we have mites? My Male 4.5 iguana has gray patches folloing his scales out lines about 1/2 long three scales or so wide they look like dried blister from a sun burn. Can I use my birds mite spray on him in case it is? He is shedding his face always,( we have only had him 2 months) the rest is coming off a scale at a time it seems.His face peels in sheets.
