Here's my 2 cents....
: Just wondering do all Igs start having kidney problems around 5 or 6 years?
*****MAJORITY YEP! but I had one a little over 6 months old maybe, die....diagnosis kidney failure!
It can happen to juvies I think not only because I was an idiot about caring for this iglet (improper hydration, humidity, diet)... but some congenital problems may have played a part in his kidneys going out so soon. This was according to the vet..I have not had an iglet so small ever again....that was like geez 15 years ago!
: Is it because they were fed animal protein or some other reason?
AGE/ ENVIROMENTAL(chronic low humidity, dehydration)/ DIET: dehydration, high phosphorus, high purines ,high animal AND/OR!! PLANT protein!!! not just animal!! When an ig gets old like me...lol the kidneys start to loose ability function ...just a process of old age****deep, deep heavy sigh****...proteins get harder and harder to break down; metabolize and filter....great opportunity for kidney problems :-( ...IF diet is not modified and dehydration, humidity issues are not addressed.
: Do you run in to this problem if they are fed all nutritious veggies.
If veggies are high purine, high phosphorus, high protein and older.....HECK YA!
: Not being able to keep high humidity, does that lead to kidney problems?
Seems to contribute a great deal to dehydration....forces the kidneys to work harder...chronic low humidity exposure sure fire way to start the dehydration process
: Has anyone had one from birth or know someone that has, fed a great veggie diet,
A few folks here have...seems to me...Joan comes to mind...she got Sneaky Sneakers as an iglet ...think she's feeding him pretty darn good...but one thing to remember...baby igs THRIVE with a higher plant protein diet those young kidneys can handle it if you also are giving them everything else they need...like hydration ,diet, humidity...its the combination of these things that staves off problems later
: had any problems? Anyone know someone with an IG over 10 years old and healthy?
No one I know of
: Anyone know the oldest IG in captivity?
Average life span according to Maders is about 14 y/o GGIs in captivity...Don't recall ever reading about an ig over 12 right now.
: Sorry all the questions, just curious! Thanks.
no prob ;-)...Welcome!
Gina
