: Dear iguana lovers,
: I have four igs, and three cats. Fortunately, they all get along splendidly.
: I don't know exactly how it happened, but as my first iguana "Dewlappy" grew and I allowed her to become "free-roaming", the cats eventually began to accept and love her. Now they will sleep with her on "her perch" and keep her warm. She loves them and vice versa. They will actually "cuddle" together. It is still amazing to me. And I think that the "trick" is to let your iguana grow to a "good size" within a confined cage. Allow the cats to view the ig. And then eventually introduce your ig to the cats outside of the cage. But, don't forget, it takes a lot of work and patience to "calm down" an ig -- in my experience I have had to work with my males for at least six or seven months, and with my female for about 10 or eleven months before they trusted me. At first the cats might try to bite and the ig may offer to bite/tail whip. KEEP MONITORING! After a while they will get along. And I would suggest this ONLY if your cats are "indoor cats". Outdoor cats tend to be more predatorial and might "eat" your igs. So please do take all of this into account.
: Once your cat/cats have become "accustomed" to just one ig, they will naturally relate peacefully and lovingly to any other that you may introduce into the family. (At least this has been my experience).
: As I mentioned before, I have four igs and three cats. They all get along peacefully and will often keep each other company, especially as they sleep. I am grateful. I never expected this. But I can go out, go shopping, go anywhere, and know that my igs are safe with the cats!
: Please let me hear from other ig/cat caretakers.
: Warm regards,
