: i was recently asked to take care of a friends iguana when they moved. i love lizards so i agreed. she is 6 years old and about 3 1/2 feet long. her name is Porky. she is gentle and wonderful. here's the prob... she wouldn't eat her first week. i figured it was because of new environment. after about 9 days she started to eat. she does not have a cage but lives on a tall perch instead like she has her whole life. she is litter trained, but has only gone to the bathroom once. her little legs are skinny and the pet store said she has a calcium deficiency so i bought her a supplement. she has a heat light on for about 10 hours a day. i am very worried because even though she is eating she doesn't go to the bathroom and will not come down from her perch. she seems to be getting thinner and has lost her color. i took her to the vet but he hadn't dealt with one of her size before. what could be the problem, and how do i fix it? i feed her collard greens, zuchini, squash, carrots, and broccoli. could she be depressed about losing her last owner? what should i do???? feel free to e-mail me at acrstnsn@ndak.net or post a reply. please help. thanks.
hi i hope you have a 150 watt day basking bulb on her during the day and a 100 150 watt night bulb on her at night you can either use a ceramic heater bulb or a black nightime bulb. your iguana needs to have heat day and night to keep warm so they can poop. you can put your day and night bulbs on a seperate timer so they can come on and off by themselves. its much easier set the timers to came on in the morning and go off at night and the other one to come on at night and off in the morning . the reason she stays on the perch all the time is because she needs to stay warm .feed her stuff high in calcium like kale mustard greens collard greens escarole parsley and other good vegtables. use vitamins everyday on her food . also get a book on iguanas to help you out and to keep your new pet healthy most vets dont know shit about iguanas only dog and cats. check out www.bigappleherp.com or www.herpsupplies.com they have good supplies and are good people to deal with they send everything right to your door. last if she dont poop you can fill your bathtub up with warm water about 3 -4 inches and the warm water will help her go to the bathroom. flush poop down toilet take her out then go back and clean the bathtub with bleach and water. then rinse theres so much for you to kow thats why you need a good book or video.
