Hello. I personally think that any type of wood chips/shaving are not good for ig substrate. Even tho some types are not "toxic" , the ig can still eat and ingest some, and that can cause him to become impacted (not able to poop). Igs lick everything, even their substrate, it would be easy to eat some chips/shavings. They are messy too. I personally use astro turf. Its inexpensive and easy to clean and disenfect. I have 3 pieces cut to fit his enclosure, I change them out, wash and disenfect, always have a clean piece ready to go. The only thing with astro turf is the edges, they tend to fray, especially after washing, I just melt the edges with a lighter. Some people use newspaper, but others feel the ink is toxic. I see it this way, if the ig has a nice tall basking spot, with a nice tall branch, he wont be spending much time on the newspaper. I just think astro turf looks nicer, and its worked out great for me and Gwaners. Hope this helps, Yvette
